The Devil You Know

First of all, why are you even dealing with the devil? You know the pain and frustration, yet you choose to keep dancing with it.

I’m not going to say it’s all your fault. It’s human nature to cling to familiarity. We are terrified of the unknown, and that is the real problem.

We convince ourselves it’s wiser to stay in a job that drains us than to chase one that might reject us. But honestly, that’s not wisdom. It’s all cowardice.

Most people don’t stay in their jobs because they love them. They stay because they know them. The routine, the colleagues, it’s all familiar, and familiarity is seductive. Meanwhile, in the back of our minds, we throw all sorts of 4 letter words our bosses and vow to leave when the next opportunity arises.

Then, an opening at another company appears, and we freeze. We’re too terrified to even apply. Our tired brains launch into a debate “What if the new place is worse?” “What if I fail?” The mind turns every dream into a potential disaster movie. So, we stay. We swallow our frustration and call it maturity.

But comfort and growth are rarely roommates. That sinking feeling you get every Sunday night isn’t normal, it’s your soul begging for a change. The “devil you know” isn’t wisdom, it’s fear in a glittering costume. It is the lie we tell ourselves to avoid taking a risk.

The irony is that everyone who ever found something better once stood exactly where you are, scared and uncertain.

Think of our ancestors. If they had been too afraid to explore and discover new lands, we would still be living in caves or worse, we’d be extinct. If The Croods didn’t leave their cave, the earthquake would have killed them. Staying in the familiar cave was the real danger.

So, for once, ask yourself “What if it is better?” What if the thing you’re so afraid of losing is the very thing blocking your next big thing?

Dump that devil. Find your peace.
